Recording the drums for CHARLESTOWN.

We arrived at Orion Studios, Kilnhurst, well prepared for our 2 day drum sessions.

The four tracks had been mixed down into 'Stem mixes' by instrument group to allow Dave to be able to hear exactly what HE wanted to in his headphones during the takes.

The only slight technical hitch was that these were on PC based USB and the studio used a MAC! ...so, an elaborate transfer process was started to get tracks off the USB drive and onto a laptop then onto a USB memory stick and then imported into the Mac (all of which took up time and had odd hiccups along the way.
Still we endured and got there in the end!

The drum set up to mikes went very smoothly as Steve the Engineer knew his studio and setup extrememly well. We were ready to start recording in 3 hours!

The four tracks were across the spectrum in terms of complexity...two straight forward numbers, one 40 minute multi-part epic and a demanding odd signature time changes instrumental.

Dave took them all in his stride, so much so that we found at the end of the 2 days we had time to add some percussion touches in as well.

Photos etc. from the session can be found on our website www.guymanning.com

Once Steve has rendered the song takes into seperate WAV files for me, I can import them into my Cubase setup at Burnside and get the drums grouped and ready for mixing. The real album recording then starts in earnest!
